Photon Pursues Purpose
CONCEPT
The core idea behind Photon Pursues Purpose was to build a small, stylised world that feels playful and toy-like while still supporting cinematic storytelling.
Inspired by construction toys such as LEGO, the goal was to imagine a fictional toy system called Tylo, a set of simple geometric pieces that can be combined to create environments and tell stories through motion.
Using this modular system, the film follows a travelling photon moving through different landscapes, gradually leading to the moment where it discovers its purpose.
The project explores how simple geometry, strong lighting, and clear composition can create an engaging story without relying on complex characters or dialogue.
TILE SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT
Before putting the metaphorical motion design pedal to the metal, I took some time to think through the logic behind the Tylo tile system.
The environments in the film are built from a set of simple geometric shapes designed to behave like modular toy pieces. To develop this system, I started by sketching a general form of a cat using basic shapes and then modelling a collection of basic shapes with subtle chamfers to keep them feeling soft and tactile.
These elements were built procedurally so that adjustments could be made easily if the proportions or measurements needed refinement later in the process.
Fortunately, the initial estimates held up, allowing the system to scale smoothly as the environments were developed.
Below are the core shapes used in the system, along with some early form explorations testing how the pieces could combine to build larger structures.
I paid extra attention to the logic as I wanted to use it as a constraint point for this project and break away from it only when absolutely necessary.
STYLEFRAMES
Before beginning animation, a set of styleframes was created to define the visual direction of the film.
These frames established the colour play, lighting style, and overall tactile feel of the toy. The goal was to create images that felt calm, graphic, and slightly surreal while maintaining the toy-like aesthetic of the environments.
Each styleframe focuses on clear composition and lighting that accents the toy like color pop these fun bits have.
PRODUCTION
A key goal of the project was to build a workflow that balanced creative exploration with procedural control.
Many of the assets were designed with flexibility in mind, allowing proportions, spacing, and color variations to be adjusted quickly. The modular nature of the Tylo system meant environments could be iterated rapidly while maintaining visual consistency across the film.
MoGraph tools within Cinema 4D played a central role in managing large groups of repeated elements. Effectors and fields were used to control distribution, variation, and colour behaviour across cloned objects, allowing scenes to remain art-directable while still benefiting from procedural workflows.
Rendering was handled using Redshift while using the ACES workflow in post to bring it all together. ( Incredibly important for those Punchy colors )
Overall, the pipeline was designed to stay lightweight and flexible, allowing the focus to remain on composition, motion, and storytelling.
While I was building the system I kept thinking of what the story must be. And I was drawn to this idea of 'Finding Purpose' and felt like this story of a photon finding purpose would be incredibly cute. In the end the photon finds purpose in sharing and helping using it's gifts. The gift of light.

CONCLUSION
This was a quick piece I took from concept to final render in the course of two and a half weeks.
Just like the photon, I too was looking out to find purpose in a world that is moving so fast, it feels like its racing away under your very feet.
