Over Engineered
Why build a simple tool when you can build a cake-cutting machine that looks like it belongs in a sci-fi factory?
This project started as a personal exploration to sharpen my mechanical rigging skills in Cinema 4D. The idea was to design something ridiculously complex for a hilariously simple task — cutting cake. Hence the name: Overengineered.
For the visual style, I leaned into Bungie’s upcoming game Marathon and its unique aesthetic of Graphic Realism. The goal was to give the machine a bold, futuristic presence, balancing hyper-detailed surfaces with striking shapes and colors.
The machine itself was kitbashed and created with tactile mechanical parts in mind.

Production Pipeline
Rigging & Animation → Cinema 4D (mechanical rigging playground!)
Rendering → Redshift (to nail that stylized realism look)
Compositing → After Effects (enhancing depth and detail)
Editing → Premiere Pro (pacing it all together)
This project was equal parts technical exercise and creative experiment. In the end, it’s a tongue-in-cheek piece that asks: Do we really need a complex machine to cut a cake? Probably not. Was it fun to build one? Absolutely.
Title Image was created in Cinema 4d and animated using Photoshop's generative features.
